Lots of boys think arts and crafts are for girls. Well I say it's all in the packaging and presentation. Not only calling your supplies "tools" but storing them in a toolbox adds to the masculine image.
The first step in earning the Cub Scout Belt Loop in Art is to identify and understand some of the common tools artists use.
I bought this tool box several years ago for a really great price during the Christmas season to keep the boys arts and crafts supplies in.
The top of the tool box has a lid which opens up. We keep our drawing paper and construction paper in here.
The next drawer has sticky collage paper (I LOVE this stuff), scissors, adhesive backed magnet roll and glue sticks. We usually have more types of glue but are running low at the moment.
Every young artist needs markers, crayons, pencils, colored pencils and stickers! We have a lot more markers and crayons that we keep in a separate caddy also.
I call this the Collage Supply Drawer even though these materials can be used for lots of things. There are feathers, sequins in different colors, shapes and sizes, colored rice (made with food coloring and hand sanitizer), pom poms in different sizes and colors and of course glitter. (I do have a daughter that uses this tool box also)
These mini drawers are my favorites. They store wiggly eyes. I love wiggly eyes! Small wood accents and sea shells.
A closer look at the very cool and maybe even a little creepy eyeball drawer.
Pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks and craft kits. I know the pastel pipe cleaners aren't very masculine but I got them on clearance after Easter.
Art and Craft "How To..." books. I am a huge fan of all things Usborne.
Sun-catcher paint, paint brushes, glitter puffy paint and a few other project pieces. Since the kids can have unassisted access to this tool box most of the paints are kept elsewhere.
There ya have it--making art tools cool for boys!
Tomorrow we will be going to the art museum to fulfill the second criteria which is understanding and exploring the use of lines, shapes, color, space, etc... in art.
Come back in a few days and we will show you a fun activity for the final criteria to earn the Art Belt Loop!
