Tomorrow is the Feast of the Annunciation. This is when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would have a son even though she had been with no man and the boy would be named Jesus.
In honor of this we decided to make an angel food cake, my first ever from scratch and a St. Gabriel craft. Let's start with the cake: I got the recipe off of the inside of my brand new beautiful green angel food cake baking pan from Nordic Ware.
- 12 eggs whites
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract ( I didn't have enough so I added 1/2 tsp orange extract)
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup sugar
Measure egg whites to equal 1 1/2 cups. Place in a mixing bowl and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Sift powder sugar and flour together. Preheat oven to 350. Add cream of tartar, extracts and salt to egg whites. Beat at high speed. Gradually add sugar, beating until sugar is dissolved and stiff peaks form. Fold in flour mixture 1/4 cup at a time.Spoon into pan. Cut through batter with a knife to remove air pockets. Bake 40-45 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched. Immediately invert pan on cooling rack. Do not remove cake from pan until completely cooled.
To this I added a glaze of 5 Tablespoons of lemon juice, 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1 drop of blue food coloring b/c Gabriel is often depicted wearing blue.
I first cracked the eggs into the little glass bowl to make sure that no shells or yolks got into the larger mixture. When done cracking all 12 eggs be sure to save the egg carton.
The kids took turns sifting the flour sugar mixture. We sifted it 3 times going from one bowl to the other.
Here is the light fluffy batter before going into the over. Did I mention my new beautiful green Nordic Ware pan from Target?
Here we are, cooled and out of the oven. Not bad for my first attempt at this. Now lets start the craft.
I have a piece of blue fabric cut from an old shirt and also a piece a white fabric cut from the sleeve of a toddle shirt. You could also use a white sock instead. There are nine eggs cups for stacking and one neatly trimmed that will be the head. There is one more that I cut and spray painted white for the lily. You could substitute white paper here if need be. The orange ribbon will be used in the center of the flower. There is a skewer to hold things together, a children's tiny blue rubber hair band, an orange scrapbooking flower and 2 heart wings cut from white felt. You will also need markers and tacky glue which I do not have pictured.
My oldest used markers to color St. Gabriel on the neatly trimmed egg holder.
My littlest stacked the egg carton pieces and then I pushed through the skewer from the bottom to hold them together.
My middle child (yes this was definitely a group effort) pulled the sleeve down over the stack, tucking the bottom up and under and then putting the head on top to cover any other extra material. I then cut off the protruding skewer.
Along with blue, St. Gabriel is also often depicted holding lily. I am not totally sure how to describe the making of the lily. I cut chunks out of the egg holder, spray painted it white, and poked a hole in the middle bottom with the skewer. Next, I cut three slits into the ribbon and used the skewer again to poke the ribbon up through the hole, cutting off any excess on the bottom and leaving the stick there for the stem, I folded back some of the "leaves" to make it look more like the shape of a lily.
To finish the angel we folded back about an half inch cuff on the blue fabric and layed it atop Gabriel's head. We used the blue rubber band to hold it into place and then cut off the excess fabric bunching around him. I cut two tiny slits into the blue robe to weave in the stem of the lily. Then C glued on the heart wings with the tacky glue. He also used the glue on the back of Gabriel's head to affix the orange scrapbooking flower to give our angel a Saintly glow.
And here is our finished product, an angel cake with a light blue glaze surrounded by blackberries and the Angel Gabriel.
