Easter will soon be upon us and I have been a little lax in the liturgical preparation. This evening I decided to make a crayon cross sun-catcher with L.
First you will need some old crayons. We have an old tin Spongebob lunch box where we keep all our used and broken crayons.
The next step would be a lot easier if you have a crayon sharpener which we did not. Instead, we whittled. I used a knife and L used a plastic orange peeler tool. Half way through, I decided this would be a good craft for my older Cub Scouts to practice their whittling skills.
As you can see we chose a color scheme of different shades of pinks and greens with a little bit of white mixed in. Wax paper is also required. I folded a piece in half and then placed the box on the middle fold line to help L keep her shaving sprinkles on just one side.
Next you need to fold the other half of wax paper over the crayon shavings. Now you need an iron. I had to dig mine out of storage. I think you can even see the dust on it in the picture. Pathetic, I know. I placed a towel underneath the folded wax paper and one over top. I had it set on medium heat. I have also seen this done with a brown paper bag which may be a better alternative as some of the wax melted out the sides and onto my towels. Just keep lifting the towel and taking a peek until you see that all the shavings are melted.
C had made a wooden cross last year during Lent that we used to trace onto the paper with black Sharpie marker.
Cut out your cross. It cools almost immediately so you won't need to wait to do this step. If you have a hole punch handy, make a hole at the top of the cross. I just used the tip of the scissors. Thread some yarn or string through the hole. Hang in the window and let the sun shine through.
Have a Blessed Easter!
